About
us
In June 2002, Dr. Uwa Onyioha-Osimiri created
in Michigan, the African Women Economic Consortium
(AWEC) and invited other women to embrace the
vision of establishing sustainable housing communities
in Africa in support of vulnerable women and orphans
and providing workshops in financial literacy,
grant writing and self improvement. These women
were Ugo Ezeala, Claudia Emezue Willis, Angel
Zoe, Adaora Osimiri, and Ella Bailey. Since then,
other women have joined the group. In addition
to the workshops, we added problem and risk mitigation,
grant writing and financial literacy workshops,
we host an annual awards luncheon called ”
Against All Odds” which honors community
leadership.
In October 2002, we put in place a provisional
committee to oversee the organization of the first
HIV/AIDS conference, which brought together the
medical community, and friends of persons living
with the virus, to discuss the political, social,
and economic impact of HIV/AIDS. Since then, AWEC
has held four annual HIV/AIDS Health Conferences.
We have had these workshops consistently. AWEC
has participated at international workshops on
orphan care, and global leadership forums. With
1000 hectares of land available for the construction
of the AWEC Village of Hope, we are prepared to
begin to create the environment that would make
life better for vulnerable women and children.
There are six members of the AWEC Board of Directors.
There are 4 countries selected presently to host
the Village of Hope Projects- US, Nigeria, Liberia,
and Ghana. We are anticipating adding more as
we complete the pilot projects.
